So, surely some of you have seen PTZtv's latest tweets and comments regarding their stream of the Port Canaveral webcam and the SpaceX community (which is not limited to just us, but also NSF and the SpaceX Facebook Group). They're... concerning to say the least.
For a time, PTZtv appeared to be positive and receptive to our response. However, for whatever reason, this appears to have changed recently. A member of this community created a website which collated a number of sources of information together to follow the JCSAT-14 recovery. This included a Twitter feed and a Google Maps embed among other things, but it crucially included an iframe embed of the Port Canaveral Webcam. This was a website created by a SpaceX fan
who was acting in good faith. They were not happy with this, and the CEO of PTZtv
took to the SpaceX Facebook Fan Group to make this post.
Not true. Let me clear up the rumor and set the record straight. Rocket Watch is over. This has absolutely nothing to do with the port getting annoyed with us or intervening in any way. It has everything to do with hackers circumventing our website, stealing our live feed and broadcasting it on
http://spacex.yasiu.pl/
with total disregard for our copyright. We had the linked website's host shut them down yesterday, but the site surfaced again. The individual behind this may think this is a joke, but we have identified him and plan to take appropriate action.
This group [SpaceX Facebook Group] has my utmost respect and I have been following the discussions here. The fact that this is a controlled group with an "identifying" Facebook Page makes a big difference. In addition to the hacking attempts, our location host has been hounded by emails to replace our camera or add another. This is not an option and is referred to as tortious interference.
A few members of that group then decided to publicly identify (doxx) this person. A person, who in good faith (okay, and maybe with bit of short sightedness) went out of his way to create a cool place for others to learn about and watch SpaceX’s progress. They apparently consider what this person did, embedding an iframe, as “hacking”. Contained within their comment is also a falsehood. They state that there is no issue with Port Canaveral.
I know for a fact
they are currently discussing with Port Canaveral about what parts of the port they can film or not.
Meanwhile, while we as moderators still publicly supported viewing their ad-infested, poorly-built website,
which redirected people to malware sites; they were going elsewhere disparaging this community and its members. This is unacceptable.
Furthermore, and apparently in response to our requests for a paid feed, they created
PTZtv Premium, which allowed users to purchase a monthly subscription to PTZtv for $14. It however quickly became apparent all one needed to do was to delete a single
<div>
element on that site, and one could receive "ad-free" access to their service, instead of paying a subscription free. A user on
/r/SpaceX
discovered this, and emailed PTZtv to notify them of this with a resolution on how to possibly fix. Here was PTZtv's
stellar
response.
Hello <<name>>,
Thank you for the feedback.
The free-to-view and premium pages work just fine in Firefox ... unaltered, default install. Just tested again to confirm.
The only redirect happens if we detect some of our content (like ads) has been removed or blocked. That redirect does not go to the Premium service, it goes to the page that explains the premium service on our company website :
http://www.ptztv.com/premium/
Rationale being ... if you don't want ads then okay, pay us directly instead. Our live streaming video doesn't happen because a magic fairy descended from the heavens and gifted it to the world. Real people work longs hours, 7 days a week and invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in the service. That investment has to be covered.
Using Firefox in "private window" mode will force the redirect too, no ad blocker present. Why... because Firefox now does tracking protection in that mode and effectively does the same as ad blocking. There are probably many other Firefox add-ons that do similar things.
If you just run your Firefox browser in an unaltered state that allows advertising ... you can watch just fine.
Is it possible to hack our Premium service? Sure it is ... most things are hackable. Organizations with billions of dollars in resources are hacked.
We don't have that kind of time or energy to prevent the toxic SpaceX fan community from persistently looking for ways to bypass our sites.
Ironically, we quickly produced the Premium service with a trivial paywall
because of begging from that same community for a means to "compensate us". The reality has been a small number of viewers have honored that intent but a large number are still hell-bent on hacking. We only see this depressing and illegal behavior when there is a SpaceX event at Port Canaveral. We can and will and do take action against people who breach our Terms & Conditions of Use.
The gross sense of entitlement to "free content" and blatant disregard for the law (or basic Economics 101) is a sad testament to those individuals concerned.
Best regards,
Emphasis mine. Despite our best efforts, they label us as toxic, and apparently the people that paid were merely "begging". That's what PTZtv thinks of their premium subscribers. It's reprehensible.
Because of a culmination of all of the above, they have decided to stop streaming footage of F9-024. This, 2 days after launching their Premium service that they specifically advertised to SpaceX fans, and is apparently non-refundable (however some have reported receiving refunds).
Their attitude is nothing but disrespectful. Their overbearing, reactionary, and negative behavior has become increasingly detrimental over this recovery attempt. It’s become an annoying distraction for us to deal with as moderators, and we won't continue to indulge their wishes any longer.
As of now, all links on this subreddit to the Port Canaveral Webcam will be removed.
They no longer deserve the publicity, and we won’t be providing it. That being said we also won’t tolerate hostility towards PTZtv, unlike them we can be the bigger people here. Any non-constructive comments will be removed.
Additionally, pending a response to an email that I sent to Port Canaveral on whether setting up a camera is allowed,
we will be looking at crowdfunding our own camera separate of PTZtv.
It’s not “tortious interference”. It’s capitalism. We’re not happy with the services we are receiving from PTZtv, so we would like to create our own. On this note, I will keep you updated on the progress of this idea in this post.
